What is a VPN?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is basically a secured method of communication over a public network, such as the Internet. All information from your office to the remote user or branch office is encrypted, so one else can understand it.

Why Do I need VPN?

Remote access for mobile users presents challenges for businesses. Traditional solutions require companies to maintain remote access servers, modem banks, telephone lines, and pay telecommunication usage charges to support mobile users.

Internet-based remote access allows businesses to leverage the Internet's ubiquitous access points, cost-savings and flexibility, but requires protecting the confidentiality and integrity of business-critical information and transactions as it travels over the Internet. Hackers or unauthorized users can initiate fraudulent transactions, steal, alter, or destroy confidential information, exposing your organization, customers, vendors, and business partners to financial losses.

SonicWALL VPN Overview

Using SonicWALL VPN, mobile users can securely connect to their office network's IPSec-compliant VPN gateway and enjoy the benefits of broadband performance and the privacy of a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The SonicWALL VPN Client software is ideal for mobile users needing secure access to mission-critical network resources, but for mobility reasons are unable to utilize a SonicWALL VPN appliance-based solution. However, for connecting branch offices together, the SonicWALL VPN firewall is the best choice.

The SonicWALL VPN Client software delivers secure access through any IP network environment, ensuring complete flexibility and reliability for mobile users. By providing secure communications over dial-up or broadband Internet connections, 802.11b wireless networks and networks using Network Address Translation (NAT), the SonicWALL VPN Client enables mobile users to increase their connect time to corporate network resources, enhancing their productivity.

The IPSec-compliant, multi-platform VPN Client runs on Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP computers, and supports SonicWALL's easy Authentication Service as well as leading digital certificate providers such as VeriSign and Entrust for added protection.

Key Features:

  • Enhanced Productivity Enhances the productivity of mobile users by enabling secure corporate network access from virtually any network connection.
  • Multi-Platform Client Support Allows secure, reliable client-initiated VPN connections from any computer running Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000 or XP to provide maximum deployment flexibility.
  • ICSA-Certified IPSec VPN Ensures compatibility with other IPSec compliant firewall and VPN products, including SonicWALL's complete line of Internet security appliances.
  • NAT-Traversal Support Many networks use Network Address Translation (NAT) to connect multiple computers to broadband Internet connection using a single IP address. SonicWALL VPN Client increases secure network access flexibility by allowing IPSec VPN traffic to pass through (traverse) any IP network using NAT.
  • Automatic Certificate Support Enables a client to send its own certificate automatically based on peer request instead of complicated local configurations. The client can also accept an ID from a peer with an accompanying certificate issued by a "trusted" CA (Certificate Authority).
  • Flexible Certificate Support Allows the SonicWALL VPN Client to use certificates that exist in Microsoft Internet Explorer to enable more CA options for trusted IPSec sessions.
  • VPN Session Reliability Supports multiple VPN gateways to ensure mission-critical network access in case the primary gateway fails. IKE "keepalives" maintain the persistence of the VPN connections to eliminate time-consuming session restarts.
  • Easy Multi-Client Deployment Using SonicWALL's GroupVPN tunnel feature allows administrators to simplify the deployment of VPN Clients by distributing common configurations to all or subgroups of VPN Clients.
  • Simplified VPN Gateway Access Allows mobile users to access a VPN gateway using DNS, WINS, and LMHOST host name resolution instead of IP addresses.

Supported Platforms for VPN Client:

  • Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME/XP

How It Works:

  • Adding SonicWALL VPN to any SonicWALL firewall is easy, and the first step. The SonicWALL Tele3, Tele3-SP, and the entire line of the PRO & GX series, come with VPN included as a standard option.
  • Once connected, you must create a VPN SA (Security Assocation) for the remote site or user.
  • The Remote/Branch Office should also be configured in the same manner.
  • For remote users, use the VPN client instead. Instructions can be found in the manuals, or you may contact us for support.
  • SonicWALL GX-650's come with 10,000 VPN clients free!
  • SonicWALL GX-250's come with 5,000 VPN clients free!
  • SonicWALL PRO 300's come with 200 VPN clients free!
  • SonicWALL PRO 200's come with 10 VPN clients free!
  • SonicWALL PRO 100's come with a single VPN client free!
